Since it was first published in mid-1960s, the Atkins diet was met with a lot of success. The key to this diet is finding the right ratio between the daily consumption of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
Low-Carbohydrate Fad Diet
Because of its properties, this diet is often referred to as the low-carbohydrate fad diet. The whole point of the diet is to reduce the intake of carbohydrates, thus making the body to use body fat as the primary source of energy. Removing simple carbohydrates from your diet will lower the levels of insulin, which will then start ketosis. Ketosis is the process when the body starts converting fat cells into energy, instead of metabolizing glucose.
Atkins Diet Phases
Usually, Atkins diet is split into 4 different stages, although most people customize this plan according to their needs. In general, the diet starts with the introductory phase which lasts for two weeks, during which the consumption of carbs is reduced to minimum. The second phase lasts a week or two, during which leafy vegetables and nuts are introduced back to the diet. The phase three involves introducing more foods rich in carbohydrates, while the final stage is preparing the body for finishing the diet and getting back to regular life.
Low Glycemic Foods
Although, the fact is that carbohydrates are used by the body for producing energy, different types have different values. Glycemic Index of a food shows what effect it has on the blood’s glycose, that is, how fast will the carbs from that food turn into energy. Simple sugars have high glycemic index, which is why sweets, candies and sugary drinks are your worst enemy when it comes to losing weight. You should avoid consuming them, especially when on Atkins diet, as they can ruin the whole process.
